The goal of The Swedish School in Portland is to develop the students’ ability to comprehend, speak, read and write Swedish. In addition, the students learn about their cultural heritage through songs, traditions, geography, history and literature.
All classes are taught in Swedish. The children must understand Swedish, and Swedish must be spoken in their homes, with the exception of the Beginners’ Group. Classes are held at Augustana Lutheran Church, 2710 NE 14th Ave. in Portland. We usually meet on the first three Saturdays of every month from 9:30 AM to 12:00 noon. The new school year starts in September, 2016.
Parents are expected to assist the teacher 2-4 times throughout the school year, depending on the size of the class. Additionally each family is requested to volunteer a minimum of 5 hours for fundraisers and field trips throughout the year.
Registration and Tuition
Registration Fee is $25 per family. This fee is non-refundable unless the class is cancelled. There is a minimum of 6 students per class and a maximum of 12.
Tuition is $300 per child for the school year.
There is a $50 discount for siblings.
The Swedish School receives a grant from The Swedish National Agency for Education. To receive such a grant, the student must be 6 or older, by December 31, 2016, AND must have at least one parent who is a Swedish citizen AND Swedish must be spoken in the home. The Swedish School will apply for this grant.
Preschool Class Ages 3-5 $300
The children develop their basic language skills and learn Swedish traditions through stories, songs, games and crafts. Simple subjects are introduced to prepare the students for the next grade level. They are encouraged to build on the skills they already have.
Group 1 K-1st grade $300
The lessons are focused on giving each student the basic skills they need to begin to read. The students are provided with a workbook, and through both class work and homework they begin reading and writing the Swedish language. The students develop their linguistic abilities and learn about Swedish culture through songs, games and other activities.
Group 2 2nd-5th grade $300
In this group we follow the curriculum for Swedish schools abroad. The students develop their reading and writing skills using textbooks and workbooks especially chosen according to ability. The students also receive instruction in other subjects such as Swedish geography, culture, history and traditions.
Beginners’ Group 1st grade and up $300
A Beginners’ Group is offered for those children who do not speak Swedish in their home. The students will learn basic language skills as well as Swedish traditions through songs, games and other activities. This class is only offered when at least 6 students are enrolled.
